OBITUARIES Wednesday A.M., May 31, 1989 Fort Worth Star-Telegram Section 1, Page 19 E.A.H. Friedheim, devised sleeping-sickness treatment Associated Press NEW YORK Dr. Ernst A.H. Friedheim, who developed a drug to treat African sleeping sickness that probably has saved 2 million lives, died of kidney cancer at his home Saturday. He was 89.

Dr. Friedheim devised melarsoprol in the 1930s and '40s to treat trypanosomiasis, or sleeping sickness. The disease, spread by the tsetse fly, remains a serious problem in Africa and Dr. Friedheim's drug is still used to treat some more advanced cases. He also developed drugs to treat many other parasitic tropical diseases, and later in his career devised remedies for lead and mercury poisoning.

When he died he was working on drugs to treat cancer. "He continued to work virtually until his death," said Thomas Donnelly, a veterinarian who worked with Dr. Friedheim. "When he was in the hospital he kept asking me about the results of our experiments. He said, 'I have to He knew he was running out of time." Dr.

Friedheim, born in Switzerland, earned a medical degree as well as a doctorate in chemistry. This training allowed him relative independence in a field dominated by research teams. Edith Brown Homemaker GLEN ROSE Edith Brown of Walnut Springs died Monday at a Glen Rose hospital. She was 74.

Jameson, a retired Civil Service inspector, died Monday at a Fort Worth hospital. He was 66. Funeral will be at 9:30 a.m. tomorrow at Greenwood Funeral Home. Burial will be in Bluebonnet Memorial Park in Colleyville.

Mr. Jameson was born in Caddo, Okla. He was a Civil Service employee at Clinton Sherman Air Force Base near Dell City, until 1970, when the base was closed and Mr. Jameson was transferred to Carswell Air Force Base. At Carswell, he was an inspector in base supply until his retirement in the middle 1980s.

He was an Army veteran of World War II and was a member of Cherry Lane Baptist Church in White Settlement. Survivors: Wife, Lola M. Jameson of White Settlement; one daughter, Susan Lawson of Joshua; three brothers, Samuel Jameson of Brush, Bobby Jameson of Headrick, and Jimmy Jameson Stillwater, one sister, Edna Baker of Tulsa, and three grandchildren. She was also a former owner and operatorof several restaurants and worked in a dress shop and a Masonic orphan's home for six years. She was a member of Saint Jo First Baptist Church and a 50-year member of the Order of the Eastern Star. Mr. Jones was a retired truck driver. Mrs. Jordan was born in Decatur. She was on the faculty at Texas Woman's University until her retirement in May 1977. She earned bachelor's and master's degrees from Texas Woman's University, and was a member of Westgate Hospital Auxiliary, Daughters of the American Revolution and the Order of Eastern Star. She was a librarian for Bridgeport public schools for four years.

Mrs. Jordan was the widow of Howard Jordan, who died in 1980. Survivors: Two daughters, Virginia Hargrove of Denton and Lynn Jordan of Portland, two grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. Clifford D. Killough Sr.

Friedheim had been a professor since 1978, issued a statement saying he had "single-handedly performed chemical synthesis, laboratory evaluation, and clinical testing in the field." The latter took him to Africa, Asia, South America and Pacific islands. "It was unusual the way he was able to take the (development of) a drug from the laboratory to its application in the field," said Dr. William Trager, a leading malaria researcher. "He had a lot of drive. He went out to Africa in the old days, when it was really Africa." A month ago, Dr.

Friedheim was honored at the 26th meeting of the International Council for Trypanosomiasis Research in Kenya. Peter deRaadt of the World Health Organization's parasitic diseases unit credited Dr. Friedheim's development of melarsoprol with saving the lives of 2 million Africans. Donnelly said that, judging from estimates in various medical texts, Dr. Friedheim's other drugs probably have saved an additional 1 million lives around the world.

He is survived by his wife, Suzanne Hagerstrom-Friedheim. Funeral arrangements are private. Betty Ann Hodge ARLINGTON Betty Ann Hodge, a homemaker, died Friday at an Arlington hospital. She was 59. Funeral was Sunday at GriffinRoughton Funeral Home in Corsicana.
