I always have a hard time coming up with an answer when someone asks me what my favorite "anything" is, but I am rereading what might be my favorite book, "Born to Run" by Chris McDougall. It's a non-fiction book that talks about McDougall's interactions with an indigenous tribe in Mexico known as the Tarahumara that puts running at the center of their culture. Admittedly, it's a little controversial in the running world, since it really kickstarted the barefoot vs. cushioned shoe debate, but for me, the biggest takeaway from reading it a second time is the heavy focus on simplicity.McDougall meets and describes a lot of great runners in the book, both in the Tarahumara world and on the competitive ultra-running (50-100+ mile races). The people that he meets are so vastly different in personality, upbringing, life experiences, and physical ability. The common thread these individuals all shared? They understood that running is a simple sport. McDougall uses a lot of examples to highlight this simplicity, but probably the most infamous one is the one that spawned the barefoot running movement. You see, the Tarahumara don't run in any sort of running shoe; instead they strap strips of leather to the bottom of their feet for protection from rocks and sharp things, and they're good to go. A lot of people saw that (didn't even read the book in some cases, if you can believe it) and decided that the key to becoming super-endurance athletes was to ditch the shoes and run barefoot, which I'm not going to get into here. But I bring it up to say this:That takeaway is the wrong one.The Tarahumara are great runners because, as a people, they run a TON of miles. Guess what? If the Tarahumara had a local running specialty store, they would still be great runners. And if barefoot running was really the answer, how were any of the ultrarunners that wore shoes able to run like they did? The book itself is worth a read, whether you enjoy running or not. Maybe you can draw your own conclusions.Just like running, Medicare is simple. Just like the different runners in McDougall's book had their own unique approach to running, you will have your own unique circ*mstances compared to others when it comes time to enroll in Medicare. That's where I come in.I am dedicated to helping people understand Medicare and avoid financial pitfalls throughout retirement. That allows me to focus on your specific situation and help you understand how Medicare will impact you financially, which many financial advisors just don't have the knowledge to do. It's the difference between hiring a personal trainer and a running coach to help you with your running. A personal trainer knows how to help you get fit, but only a running coach will help you maximize your running. Your Medicare WILL affect you retirement. Isn't it important to work with someone who knows what they're doing?Message me today to learn more about how I can make Medicare simple for you!
