Job Description SummaryThe Payroll Accountant is responsible for managing payroll taxes, quarterly/year-end reporting, and payroll reconciliation for a workforce exceeding 10,000 employees. The ideal candidate will be able to handle a variety of payroll functions under strict deadlines. The Payroll Accountant is a lead role and will oversee and manage the processing of quarterly/year-end files, payroll audits and the reconciliation of payroll data.
Essential Functions And Responsibilities
- Organizes, prepares and maintains payroll records
- Ensures compliance with federal, state and local payroll wage and hour laws and best practices
- Manages the set-up of payroll taxes and how they translate from system to system
- Works with Liberty’s Accounting division for reconciling payroll tax files, the GL and bank statements
- Works with internal and external auditors for reporting payroll information
- Manages all quarterly payroll reporting
- Oversees year-end processing of W2s and W2 corrections
- Strictly adheres to Liberty University policies, representing the University in an exemplary manner.
- Works effectively as a team member, embracing and fostering LU’s mission.
Supervisory ResponsibilitiesSupervises and directs the workload for Payroll Specialists and Payroll Assistants that support Payroll Accounting projects.
Qualifications And CredentialsEducation and Experience
- Bachelor’s degree (Business/Accounting/Finance focus)
- 5+ years’ experience with payroll tax, reconciliation, and quarterly/year-end reporting
- 5+ years of previous payroll processing experience

- Ability to effectively communicate both verbally and in writing to convey clear, well articulated information.
- Possess public communication skills that allow professional representation of Liberty University to a variety of business, government and community customers and associates.
- Strong organizational skills.
- Proficient in Microsoft Excel
- Detail-oriented
Problem Solving
- Intuitively able to reason, analyze information and events, and apply judgment in order to solve problems of both a routine and complex nature.
Physical and Sensory Abilities
- Required to travel to local and campus locations.
- May be required to sit to perform deskwork or type on a keyboard.
- Regularly required to hear and speak in order to effectively communicate orally.
- Regularly required to stand, walk, and climb stairs to move about the campus.
- Handle materials, reach overhead, kneel or stoop in order to conduct business.
- Regularly lift 10 or fewer pounds.
WORKING CONDITIONS
Work Environment
The working environment in which one will typically perform the essential functions of this position is a climate-controlled setting. It is well-lighted, and the noise level is moderate. The working environment also includes the facilitation of events outdoors occasionally.
Driving Requirements
Use of one’s personal vehicle (or LU vehicles) may be required for travel in the performance of the essential functions of this position. Proof of a valid Virginia driver’s license, an acceptable DMV record, and liability insurance is required.
