Curses As receiver, Dieken foiled again! When Browns' rookie quarterback Mark Miller threw a threeyard touchdown pass to Calvin Hill early in the fourth quarter of. yesterday's 41-20 victory over Buffalo, the most disappointed man in the Stadium was Doug Dieken. The big left offensive tackle for the Browns was an eligible receiver on the play and, in fact, Miller's primary target. While everybody was congratulating Hill on his second TD of the day, Dieken stood -hands on hips. -in utter frustration of what might have been.

He was crushed. The only touchdown pass he has ever caught did not count. It came during an exhibition against Detroit this past summer. "When we got reasonably ahead, I begged Sam (coach Sam Rutigliano) to use that play again." said Dieken. "He's not a merciless man.

Besides, my mom came in from Illinois to see the game." It was all set when Dieken entered the game on a first-andgoal situation at the Buffalo three. He notified the referee he would line up as a receiver. Double wide 223 was a play-action pass with Dieken going down and out. "When I got out, the middle linebacker -floated out with me," explained Dieken, a tight end in college. "Calvin cut under and made the catch.

"It might have been tough for me to catch because I was looking into the sun," he said, reaching back for the old standby excuse. His teammates were eager and anxious to have Dieken score. "Everybody said they looked for me after making their blocks to see if I caught it," he said. Saturday's college football EAST Albany, N.Y. 41, Cortiand S1.

I would have punted and gained field position. The score was only 7- 0 at the time.

Sam went for the first down. Happily, Mike Pruitt and the front line made the coach: a genius with a 10- yard gain, followed by a TD soon afterward. In the fourth period, near the Bills' goal line, I'd have taken the sure three points on a field goal rather than gone for the inches needed for a first down. I would have taken the three because the Bills had missed an extra point earlier and I didn't want to take the chance of coming away without a score. This time the Bills held.

Admittedly the Browns seemed to have the game in complete control at the time. I mention this just in case i it should come up again. Sam's gambles are indicative that he decided to disdain conservative football yesterday and the customers always appreciate that, despite the consequences. Next week the Browns can expect a load against the redfaced Oilers who apparently took Cincinnati too lightly yesterday. The defense will have to tighten up for that one.

The convincing victory was the Browns' fifth of the season, winning me two double chocolate sodas. I loved the game plan. Thanks, fellas. pep talk Opinion From First Sports Page Mixmaster. He kept the Bills off balance.

When a line play was expected he crossed them up with passes, two of which went for early touchdowns. A one-handed catch by Calvin Hill was a dandy. After the offensive no-show in Kansas City last week. the comeback was needed to rekindle the Browns' confidence in themselves. And, of course, it will get the fans and the media including this critic off their backs for a week.

Still. it gives one pause to reflect on what could have happened against the Chiefs if the Browns had remembered they have more guns on offense than Greg Pruitt. Incidentally, Greg, used as he was yesterday, fit perfectly into the game plan. With Mike running well and often the Bills couldn't key on Greg. Moreover, Greg now is approaching his old form.

getting off the ball faster, cutting back well. The Browns cut down on their mistakes, committing no turnovers until the game was wrapped up. Thanks to Thom Darden's interceptions, it was the Bills who had the costly turnovers. Two things I wouldn't have done that Sam did. In the second period I wouldn't have gambled on fourth down when the ball Middies get From First Sports position throughout the but missed two field goal Then Pitt turned the ball throwing an incomplete fourth-and-three at the "I thought we were a team, but I wasn't sure we Pitt's league," the coach think our team wanted very badly.

Commander Ray "We have a'31 Chevrolet parked in our service department. It really looks great and generates a lot of conversation from our customers. It sure makes me proud to think that West Park was four years old when this car was built.

My father started the business here in 1927. Twenty- seven years later 1 I carne into the business, and today my son is working toward the time he will run the place. Another thing that's been around since 1927 is our philosophy of giving West Park customers outstanding CHEVROLET quality, service and value. Come in soon and see what I mean!"
