A native of Pittston, he was a son of Mrs. Mary Kearney Cawley, Lansdowne, and the late John Cawley, Pittston area plumbing contractor. He was a graduate of Pittston High School, the University of Scranton and Jefferson Medical School, Philadelphia.

Dr. Cawley served as captain in the Army during World War II and saw action in Europe. He was awarded several decorations including a Purple Heart. Following the he went to medical school "and afterwards maintained. his practice in the Philadelphia area.
