Who Is Jack Black?
Jack Black is an American actor, comedian, musician, writer, and producer. He’s best known for playing Dewey Finn in School of Rock (2013), the titular role in Nacho Libre (2006), Barry Judd in High Fidelity (2000) and Carl Denham in King Kong (2005).
He was born in Santa Monica, California on August 28, 1969. His parents were both satellite engineers. He was raised in his mother’s faith, Judaism.
Black has been nominated for several awards throughout his career. For his acting roles, he’s been nominated for two Golden Globes. In September of 2018, he was honored with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
You may also remember him from 2001’s Shallow Hal or the recently rebooted Jumanji franchise. If you’ve got kids, his voice might be familiar to you. Jack Black voices Po in the Kung-Fu Panda movies.

That’s not the only type of voice work he does though. Jack Black is also a talented singer and musician. Familiar fans have treasured the comedy rock duo Tenacious D since 1994. The band was founded by Jack Black and Kyle Glass, who were both members of The Actors’ Gang theatre at the time.
Tenacious D is more than a joke though–the hilarious pair actually won a Grammy award! In 2013, they were nominated for the Best Comedy Album for Rize of the Fenix. Jimmy Fallon was the winner that year. But later on, in 2015, they won the Grammy for Best Metal Performance for “The Last in Line.”
They beat out serious contenders like Anthrax and Slipknot for the honor, making their win controversial in the metal community. Though they’re a comedy rock duo, Tenacious D does have some musical talent that can’t be denied.
Prior to his career success, Black had a troubled childhood. At the age of 10, he struggled after his parent’s divorce and his subsequent move to Culver City, California with his father. He continued visiting his mother and older half-siblings in Hermosa Beach whenever possible.
Jack Black attended special schools for struggling students and admitted to a cocaine addiction at the age of 14. Luckily for all of us, he was able to overcome his demons and lead a fulfilling life full of laughter.

In 2006, Jack Black married Tanya Haden. Haden is an accomplished musician and cellist herself, playing with bands like the Silversun Pickups and The Warlocks. Black and Haden have two children, both sons, born in 2006 and 2008. That’s right–Jack Black’s kids are teenagers.
Prior to his marriage to Haden, Black was in a long term relationship with Will & Grace actress Laura Kightlinger. They were together from 1997 to 2005.
Fortunately, unlike so many Hollywood couples, Jack Black’s marriage to Haden has stood the test of time. Fourteen years and two kids together is quite an accomplishment. We wish the talented couple continued happiness.
